Westminster Village North’s annual Grandfathers & Granddaughters brunch is always a highlight of the Valentine’s Day season, and this year was no exception. It’s the perfect opportunity for our residents to spend some quality time with their granddaughters, and even great granddaughters, while all enjoy a wonderful buffet, capped off by our chocolate fountain dessert bar.
Independent residents made Valentine’s Day bracelets, chocolate spoons (with Hershey’s Kisses), and other Valentine’s Day treats for our HealthCenter residents. Before delivering the hand-crafted gifts to long-term care residents, they gathered for a Valentine’s Day breakfast, where satisfied smiles (and lots of red!) left no doubt which holiday they were celebrating.
Westminster Village North Assisted Living residents used their Christmas Spirit to tackle a big project -- making seven blankets for Project Linus. These blankets are given to children who need the warmth and security of a blanket lovingly handcrafted. These seven blankets went to the Julian Center, but others are donated to Peyton Manning's Children's Hospital, Riley Children's Hospital, Methodist Hospital, The Little Red Door, and local police and fire departments. What a wonderful way to say, "Merry Christmas!"
The holidays are definitely underway at Westminster Village North, with the kick-off of the second annual Christmas Bazaar. Residents strolled past booths offering home-made cakes, candies, even pet toys, while other staff offered their own unique talents -- from dancing, to violin playing, priceless "psychiatric help," and even fortune telling. Santa was on hand as always, this year wearing his Hawaiian garb with help from his island elves.
We celebrated our 39th Anniversary on November 16, with a champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception followed by a reception featuring Kris Sanchack, accompanist for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. The beautiful program of classical favorites dedicated our new baby grand piano, a gift from The Westminster Foundation made possible by the generosity of Westminster Village North residents. What a wonderful afternoon and evening!
Westminster Village North's own Harry Hirschman took part in the 236th US Marine Corps Birthday at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. As the oldest living Marine in Indiana, Harry had the honor of cutting the ceremonial birthday cake with the Marine sword and presenting the first piece of cake to the youngest Marine present. Congratulations, Harry, and thank you for your service! (See more photos at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center page on Facebook.)
Westminster Village North residents marked the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania with a moving service led by the Rev. Dan Sutherin, chaplain at the Village. Members of VFW Post 261 were an essential part of the service, using a flag donated to the Village by resident Martha Davis. This special flag was presented to Martha’s family at the death of her father, a veteran of World Wars I and II. It now resides in a place of honor in a display case in our Sycamore Assisted Living building. David Newman, choir director at Downy Avenue Christian Church was soloist at the service.
Those are all descriptions of the most recent "Crafting with Sherry" session our independent residents enjoyed. In this class, students learned to take some very unusual materials (paper towel rolls, bathroom tissue rolls) and turn them into amazing wall art sculptures.
When someone at Westminster Village North celebrates that 100th birthday milestone, everyone celebrates! Alice Alter is our most recent centenarian. Join the celebration and scroll through photos of her party.
Our 57-acre campus is beautiful in every season, but especially so in spring and summer. It's then that the manicured lawns, carefully tended gardens and natural woodlands come together to create a breathtaking landscape. Enjoy scrolling through these photos, then call us for a personal tour.
Perfect weather, a bountiful feast catered from the kitchens of Westminster Village North, and a full field enjoying the beautiful Harbour Trees Golf Club in Noblesville made The Westminster Foundation's 9th Annual Charity Golf Outing another wonderful success! Because it's the only major fundraiser The Foundation hosts each year, the charity golf outing is especially important to the mission of Westminster Village North, providing funds for special programs as well as benevolent care to needy residents. Details and sponsor names will be in our July 2011 newsletter on this website.
What better way to celebrate spring than with the inauguration of a beautifully landscaped new putting green. Conveniently located to all Westminster Village North residents, the beautifully landscaped space took center stage while residents and staff enjoyed a bit of friendly competition along with sunshine and refreshments.
When the Super Bowl Committee asked for help knitting 8,000 Colts-blue-and-white scarves to help identify volunteers at the event, our ladies were up for the challenge. They’ve completed 35 and are still working. “Besides,” says WVN organizer Kay Broughton, “it’s a great excuse to get together and chat while we knit.”
Each week, more than 25 independent and assisted living residents at Westminster Village North hand-craft some 30 dolls. Materials are provided through the generosity of these residents and their neighbors in the Village. At a special Doll Project Christmas Tea, each participant was given her own doll as a reminder of the wonderful difference these dolls make for children in hospitals across the U.S. and in Mexico.
It’s a tradition at Westminster Village North for staff to give residents a holiday gift. Sometimes it’s an interpretation of a Christmas play or movie. Sometimes it’s a musical program. This year, staff members dug deep into their talents to find something they could individually make for residents. From homemade candies and cookies, to venison chili, Christmas ornaments, and spiced tea, the array of gifts from which residents could choose was wide.”
